Capacity Building
Government officials, protected area staff and local communities are just a few groups of people who benefit from WWF’s capacity building activities. Raising the knowledge and skills of those on the front lines protecting Laos’ wonderful biodiversity is key to ensure it remains well managed into the future.
Here are some examples of the capacity building work WWF-Laos is engaged in:
> CarBi: Builds the ability of law enforcement agencies to combat illegal transboundary timber and wildlife trade. This involves technical, leadership and health and safety training, while they are also taught GIS skills and how to use ‘tactical’ mapping to identify hotspots of illegal activity.
> Siphandone Project: To secure the sustainable use of fisheries and aquatic resources in this priority wetland site in southern Laos, WWF supports communities to diversify livelihoods. Technical training on raising livestock and growing alternative crops to ease pressure on fish stocks are carried out.
> Sustainable Rattan Management: WWF is developing forest management plans with communities in Bolikhamsay, Xekong and Saravan to ensure sustainable management, while also enabling a cleaner production environment.
> Nam Pouy NPA Elephant Project: For several years, WWF has carried out capacity trainings with the District Department of Natural Resources and Environment staff to improve law enforcement in the protected area. Since WWF’s involvement, there has been zero poaching of elephants in the NPA.
> Eld’s Deer Sanctuary: The development of land use plans in and around the Eld’s deer sanctuary is crucial if the dry forest habitat is to be managed correctly. To do this, WWF works with provincial and district authorities, as well as villages, to increase their understanding and ability to produce effective plans that allow equitable access to resources while also conserving the deer’s critical habitat.
